Sharing Session for HKBU Nursing Students: Multicultural Health within Diverse Communities
Date: 22nd October 2025 (Wednesday)
Venue: Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)
Attendees: 84 nursing students
On 22nd October 2025, the Multicultural Health Services (MCHS) team had the privilege of conducting a dedicated sharing session titled “Multicultural Health within Diverse Communities” for nursing students at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).
A total of 84 future nurses attended the session, engaging with real-world insights from our ongoing Medi Help project – a pioneering telepharmacy and community health initiative designed specifically for Hong Kong’s ethnic minority populations.
What Was Covered
The session equipped HKBU nursing students with practical knowledge and cultural competencies essential for serving diverse patient populations:
- Understanding Cultural Barriers: How language, religious beliefs, and traditional health practices affect healthcare access and adherence among multicultural communities in Hong Kong.
- Medi Help Project Insights: Real case studies and data from our work with Pakistani and Indian communities, including common medication errors, adherence challenges, and successful intervention strategies.
- Culturally Competent Communication: Practical techniques for building trust, using medical interpreters effectively, and delivering health education that respects cultural norms.
- Chronic Disease Management Across Cultures: Tailoring diabetes, hypertension, and asthma management plans to accommodate dietary practices, fasting during Ramadan, and traditional medicine use.
- Equity in Nursing Practice: How future nurses can advocate for inclusive policies and reduce health disparities for ethnic minority patients.
Why This Matters
Hong Kong’s nursing workforce is on the front line of healthcare delivery. Yet many nursing graduates report feeling unprepared to care for patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Sessions like this bridge that gap – ensuring that tomorrow’s nurses enter the profession with the skills, confidence, and cultural humility to serve all of Hong Kong’s communities equitably.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to HKBU Nursing Faculty for inviting MCHS and for prioritising multicultural health education in their curriculum.
